Taxes

Taxes- a yuk word no matter who you are. But taxes are a necessary part of an orderly society as our tax dollars provide needed infrastructure and services that benefit society as a whole. As individuals nearly all of us face sales taxes, income taxes and property taxes. Only the rich seem to be able to avoid taxes - as contradictory as that may seem. Taxes are a part of life.

Businesses pay taxes too - or at least they should. But lately it seems Republican businesses do nothing but whine and complain about taxes saying it keeps them from being competitive and prevents job creation. Guess what - taxes are a normal cost of doing business in this country the same as electricity, water, and raw materials. Can you imagine a business calling the electric company and saying they don't want to pay their electric bill because it keeps them from being competitive and stops job growth? They would be working without electricity in no-time. In the same way - taxes should not be optional. If you operate a business in this country you have a responsibility to pay a fair share of taxes to support the infrastructure and services of our government. After all, if your business catches fire - you'll want someone to put that out. You might also want trucks and cars to be able to get to your business via roads and rails. These things don't come free - and it shouldn't be left to individuals to pay all these costs.

It should be noted that Democrats own business too - yet we pay our fair share of taxes without complaint. We do so while still generating a profit and providing growth resulting in more jobs. How is it that Democrats can do this and Republicans can't?

We are not falling for your scare tactics. Pay your taxes and stop your whining. We're sick of it.

Hey Dennis,
After living abroad, I appreciate paying taxes so much more. Because while we lived in Germany, my husband's salary was taxed at 28%.

At that rate, we had access to public transportation, rail and bus lines, for a small fee. If we had been German citizens, we would have had access to universal health care with no worries about getting sick, losing our homes or not being treated because we couldn't pay the hospital.

Germany had roads with no pot holes and after every snow storm, the street sweepers would come out and clean up the mess.

Drunk driving deaths were nearly non-existent because not only of the zero tolerance but because of the public transportation that was available to those that went out to party. Getting on a train with happy singing Germans was a hoot.

Those are just some of the things that we enjoyed by paying 28% of our income to the feds. We did our taxes last month (with turbotax) and our US federal tax liability with a mortgage (no kids) was only 14%. I would have easily paid 10% more if I could get universal health care, roads without pot holes and being closer than 5 miles to the nearest bus stop. Trains? None here at all.

Isn't it ironic that NPR was defunded yesterday and yet, no jobs were created by that. Don't even get me started on the other 'social' ills like same-sex marriage and abortion funding because outlawing those things don't create jobs, they take jobs away. Most of Europe and Germany allows same-sex marriages and abortions with no effect on their societies. Indeed, they have recovered from the recession because of their social programs much earlier than the good ole U.S. of A.

How many people in the US will lose their jobs because of the GOP's agenda?

Enjoy your blog! Keep up the good stuff Dennis.

Cheers!

Pay your taxes and stop your whining.

I love it! You guys should make that your official campaign slogan for 2012! (it's just short enough to fit on a bumper sticker).
Sounds like a real winner.

Only the rich seem to be able to avoid taxes...

As usual, you have the facts ass-backwards. (I know, facts are icky).

In 2008, for example, the top 50% of earners paid 97.30% of federal income tax (the bottom 50% only paid 2.7%). Of course, Federal income tax is only part of the total tax picture, but how ever you slice it up the wealthy end up paying way more. Here's a good breakdown by the highly respected Stephen Moore:

Sorry Den, that's just more wishful thinking on your part. The most current data show that the lowest tax, most Republican leaning states are kicking the economic and job growth butt of the higher tax, Dem leaning states:

But more to the point of your post:

I think that your fundamental premise is flawed. You seem to be saying that we should be docile sheep and just accept whatever demands our masters place on us.

Conservatives view it the opposite way: the people are the masters and the government are the servants of the people. Additionally, Conservatives understand the inherent empire building dynamic of bureaucratic institutions. If they are not kept on a short leash, their own inner momentum will cause them to spiral out of control. One brake and safeguard against that tendency is the popular outcry of the taxpaying citizens.

In that sense, "whining and complaining is not only a good thing, it is the right and responsibility of a free people.

Come to think of it, it was the whining and complaining of the colonists against an arrogant and unresponsive taxing authority which lead to the birth of this great nation.
