Bees

I saw a discussion on Real Time with Bill Maher about the crisis of the Bees dying off across the nation. I wonder if anyone has given any thought to the effects of genetic engineering of plants and their interaction with bees. If I had to guess I'd say that bees can't "see" genetically engineered crops the same way they "see" a natural plant.

We can't assume that the rest of nature will quickly adapt to our genetic tampering. When unaltered plants cross with genetically altered plants, they too become genetically altered. While using science to generate more food for our exponentially increasing population, we may find we have engineered our own starvation. Reversing the process once started will be nearly impossible. We've already started - now what?

We can't live without bees.

National Geo Magazine did an article on this topic last month. It was about a fungus or something I think. You're correct, we can't live without bees!

Yes - I think I saw that article (National Geographic is one of my all time favorite magazines if only for the photography!) and I agree - it could be a fungus. But I'm just throwing out my personal guess that it could be related to genetic engineering as well. I just did a quick google search and I guess I'm not the only one that has that suspicion.

I guess my point is that we like to tamper and fix rather than research, test, and then tamper.

Actually Lisa, I think my real point was that I believe it's never a good idea to tinker with nature. Just because we discovered we could doesn't mean we should. All of nature is a careful balancing act. When we tinker we through off the balance.

BTW - thanks for visiting my blog! I've enjoyed our discussions on Kelly's blog. :)

I really like your blog and your point of view. I'm very blue in a sea of red here in Indy so I visit sites that agree with my perception of the world.

I totally agree that messing with Mother Nature is going to be the demise of humans. Look at global warming, look at the die off of bees which I think our pesticides have something to do with it too, and the gulf oil spill and what that did to the sea life. Our glaciers are melting in Europe. Our love of fossil fuels is killing mankind and unfortunately, I'm just watching in horror as it develops. I can't even focus on Japan right now. Mother Nature can't be messed with.

Some of my conservative friends (that I still speak to), laugh at my tree hugging leanings but I cry for them. They don't see what I see.

My whole perspective changed living abroad. I saw that everyone on every other continent shares our goals and dreams. They want to live peacefully and have an economy that allows them to earn a decent wage so that they can raise their family. This boogie man mentality is exhausting in the grand scheme of things. I hate war.

Nat Geo is my favorite magazine. This past year is the first year I've ever subscribed. I could never afford it before.

Have a great day Dennis.

I've said a few times before in this blog that "if it isn't happening to them - right now, then it isn't happening" or it isn't important. Sadly and tragically "too late" is way too late when dealing with Nature. We can live in harmony with each other and the Earth, or - as she has done many times in the past - the Earth will heal herself of the plague called humans.
